Did Tariffs Make America Great?

“Make America Great Again!” will, given the astonishing victory it produced for Donald Trump, be recorded among the most successful slogans in political history.
Yet it raises a question: How did America first become the world’s greatest economic power?
In 1998, in “The Great Betrayal: How American Sovereignty and Social Justice Are Being Sacrificed to the Gods of the Global Economy,” this writer sought to explain.

However, as the blazing issue of that day was Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton, it was no easy task to steer interviewers around to the McKinley Tariff.
Free trade propaganda aside, what is the historical truth?
As our Revolution was about political independence, the first words and acts of our constitutional republic were about ensuring America’s economic independence.
“A free people should promote such manufactures as tend to render them independent on others for essentials, especially military supplies,” said President Washington in his first message to Congress.
The first major bill passed by Congress was the Tariff Act of 1789.
Weeks later, Washington imposed tonnage taxes all foreign shipping. The U.S. Merchant Marine was born.
In 1791, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton wrote in his famous Report on Manufactures:
“The wealth … independence, and security of a Country, appear to be materially connected with the prosperity of manufactures. Every nation … ought to endeavor to possess within itself all the essentials of national supply. These compromise the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing, and defense.”
During the War of 1812, British merchants lost their American markets. When peace came, flotillas of British ships arrived at U.S. ports to dump under priced goods and to recapture the markets the Brits had lost.
Henry Clay and John Calhoun backed James Madison’s Tariff of 1816, as did ex-free traders Jefferson and John Adams. It worked.
In 1816, the U.S. produced 840 thousand yards of cloth. By 1820, it was 13,874 thousand yards. America had become self-sufficient.
Financing “internal improvements” with tariffs on foreign goods would become known abroad as “The American System.”
Said Daniel Webster, “Protection of our own labor against the cheaper, ill-paid, half-fed, and pauper labor of Europe, is … a duty which the country owes to its own citizens.”
This is economic patriotism, a conservatism of the heart. Globalists, cosmopolites and one-worlders recoil at phrases like “America First.”
Campaigning for Henry Clay, “The Father of the American System,” in 1844, Abe Lincoln issued an impassioned plea, “Give us a protective tariff and we will have the greatest nation on earth.”
Battling free trade in the Polk presidency, Congressman Lincoln said, “Abandonment of the protective policy by the American Government must result in the increase of both useless labor and idleness and … must produce want and ruin among our people.”
In our time, the abandonment of economic patriotism produced in Middle America what Lincoln predicted, and what got Trump elected.
From the Civil War to the 20th century, U.S. economic policy was grounded in the Morrill Tariffs, named for Vermont Congressman and Senator Justin Morrill who, as early as 1857, had declared: “I am for ruling America for the benefit, first, of Americans, and, for the ‘rest of mankind’ afterwards.”
To Morrill, free trade was treason:
“Free trade abjures patriotism and boasts of cosmopolitanism. It regards the labor of our own people with no more favor than that of the barbarian on the Danube or the cooly on the Ganges.”
William McKinley, the veteran of Antietam who gave his name to the McKinley Tariff, declared, four years before being elected president:
“Free trade results in our giving our money … our manufactures and our markets to other nations. … It will bring widespread discontent. It will revolutionize our values.”
Campaigning in 1892, McKinley said, “Open competition between high-paid American labor and poorly paid European labor will either drive out of existence American industry or lower American wages.”
Substitute “Asian labor” for “European labor” and is this not a fair description of what free trade did to U.S. manufacturing these last 25 years? Some $12 trillion in trade deficits, arrested wages for our workers, six million manufacturing jobs lost, 55,000 factories and plants shut down.
McKinley’s future Vice President Teddy Roosevelt agreed with him, “Thank God I am not a free trader.”
What did the Protectionists produce?
From 1869 to 1900, GDP quadrupled. Budget surpluses were run for 27 straight years. The U.S. debt was cut two-thirds to 7 percent of GDP. Commodity prices fell 58 percent. U.S. population doubled, but real wages rose 53 percent. Economic growth averaged 4 percent a year.
And the United States, which began this era with half of Britain’s production, ended it with twice Britain’s production.
Under Warren Harding, Cal Coolidge and the Fordney-McCumber Tariff, GDP growth from 1922 to 1927 hit 7 percent, an all-time record.
Economic patriotism put America first, and made America first.
Of GOP free traders, the steel magnate Joseph Wharton, whose name graces the college Trump attended, said it well:
“Republicans who are shaky on protection are shaky all over.”

The predicted red wave in the 2022 midterm elections turned out to be a mere splash. Media analysts will read the tea leaves and decipher what this means about GOP messaging and other apparently insightful lessons to be learned. This is all BS. This election was possibly more fraudulent than the 2020 election.
In 2020 Trump likely won by 10-12 million votes or more. I make that assertion based on the number of votes Trump received in his reelection campaign above the number of votes that Obama received, the number of votes Clinton was awarded, and the alleged attribution of voted to Biden. Biden allegedly received 81 million votes, Obama received 69 million, and Trump supposedly only 74 million. I have yet to find anyone to explain how Biden could possibly receive more votes than Obama while hiding in his basement. Biden probably received less votes than Hillary Clinton which was about 65 million. In Florida, Trump actually received 1.1 million more votes than DeSantis in his recent landslide victory. Nationwide, Trump received more votes than any sitting president in history.
Currently, the economy is dismal, inflation out of control, and 75% of Americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction. In addition to these salient facts, for the past two and half years, Democrat governors have been acting like total fascists. Yet, we are to believe that Democrats gained two governor’s seats and one senate seat? This defies all logic and reason and is total BS.
Consider the case of Florida. Governor Ron DeSantis who won with almost 60% of the vote, a very similar percentage to the Republican governor of Wyoming in his victory. Wyoming is a very Republican state. Florida Republicans are not as conservative or libertarian as Wyoming. Florida Republicans are generally more moderate, although this is clearly changing since Trump and DeSantis.
Why did DeSantis win so big?
After being pressured into an unconstitutional lockdown (which did have many loopholes) DeSantis apparently recognized the con and pushed back, and even apologized for the lockdown, stating that it caused harm. Florida opened up its state forcing other Republican governors to follow suit. DeSantis pushed back on lockdowns, as well as mask and vaccine mandates. DeSantis hired Dr. Ladapo as Florida’s surgeon general. The Florida department of health gave guidance against wearing masks in community settings, then the Florida Department of Health advised against children getting Covid shots because the risk outweighed the benefit, and more recently, the Florida Department of Health has advised against men under 40 getting the shots because there is an 84% increase in cardiac death.
The governor undercut cities and counties forcing mask mandates by basically taking away their ability to enforce fines. The Florida Department of Health created broad exemptions for Covid shots allowing anybody to claim an exemption and not have to get the shot. Even healthcare workers working at Medicare facilities. This was done by creating a broad religious exemption based on an ethical or moral belief, which also states that the employer can’t ask the employee about their beliefs.
Governor DeSantis has also pushed back against critical race theory, and the grooming of children with transgenderism, and the state is about to make gender transitioning illegal for minors. Other actions contrary to the Woke mob include laws allowing motorist to defend themselves from attacks by rioting mobs and firing prosecutors refusing to enforce laws against rioters.
Florida turned from purple to deep red on the political map in a few years. Floridians have typically been moderate. This political change occurred because DeSantis is perceived as anti-lockdown, anti-mandates, and increasingly anti Covid shots, as well as anti-Woke. In short, DeSantis is perceived as pro freedom, and Floridian’s decided in favor of freedom over fascism.
This is the crux of the issue and the logical leap of faith required to believe the election results of the 2022 midterms. The Pennsylvania senate election literally gave us a brain damaged left wing fascist who is likely to of had a stroke as a result of the Covid shot. This same candidate who chased an unarmed black man with a gun in the past, dominated the black vote in Philadelphia. It is also a leap of faith to believe that Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, decided to reelect fascist governors. The same reason that moderate Floridians chose freedom over fascism is the same reason that these states would reject their fascist governors.

I was re-watching the movie, Darkest Hour, the other day, about the weeks leading up to Great Britain’s entrance into World War II, and I was struck by the similarities between the political dynamics of their country during that time to the United States, today. England was facing an existential threat from an evil totalitarian regime of Nazi Germany, and England’s Prime Minister was a loud, outspoken, rude, politically incorrect man named Winston Churchill. Churchill believed the best course of action was to stand up to the evil Nazi regime, and if they were to negotiate, they could then do so from a position of strength. He understood that the most dangerous course of action for the country would be not to fight.
Churchill was not well received by the elites or the political class of England. He was brash and outspoken, saying unpopular things. The King told Churchill once, “you scare people. One never knows what’s going to come out of your mouth next. Something that will flatter. Something that will wound.”
One does not have to be perfect to be a great leader, in fact, many times, their flaws are what makes them great. Churchill’s wife told him, “ you are strong because you are imperfect. You are wise because you have doubts.”
A contingent of career politicians worked behind the scenes, colluding together to oust Churchill because they believed their positions and their special interests were best served not to fight. They were willing to achieve a peace treaty with the Nazis at-all-cost even if it meant negotiating from a position of weakness. It was highly unlikely that Germany would have abided by the terms of the agreement forged under those circumstances. The treaty would only have been used by Germany to exploit England’s weaker position.
What the peace-at-all-cost contingent in England did not realize was that Germany was at war with them, as they were with the rest of Europe, and simply saying “I do not want war” , does not make the war go away. In fact, it makes the war inevitable, and the results more devastating.
Today in the United States, we have an existential threat in the form of Communist Chinese. And for the last four years, we have had a President who is a loud, outspoken, rude, flawed man named Donald Trump. Trump has not been well received by the elites or the political class of the United States. He is politically incorrect. No one knows what’s will come out of his mouth next.
Like Churchill facing the Nazis, Trump believes the best course of action is to stand up and confront the evil Communist Chinese, and by doing so, we will negotiate trade deals and other agreements with them from a position of strength. He understands that the most dangerous course of action for our country would be not to confront the Chinese, and pursue a peace-at-all-costs approach.
Throughout Trump’s term in office, there has been a contingent of career politicians, tech billionaires, and the media working behind the scenes, colluding together to oust him. These people believe their positions and their special interests will be best served to acquiesce to the Chinese, pursue peace-at-all-cost thus giving away our power at the negotiating table. But these trade deals negotiated from a position of weakness makes it highly unlikely that the Chinese would abide by the terms of the agreement, merely using the treaty to further exploit our weaker position.
China is at war with the United States...... pretending they are not, does not make their unfair trade practices, their currency manipulation, their stealing of intellectual property, magically go away. It merely emboldens them, making all of their unfair, illegal, unethical practices get worse.
Both Churchill and Trump understood the premiere importance of individual and national sovereignty, and the utmost necessity it is to defend it against anyone or anything set to take it from us.
For those who reject the “ America First ” approach to international relations that Trump has promoted, answer this, does China put China first? Yes. Does Russia put Russia first? Yes. Does Germany put Germany first? Yes. Does (fill in the blank) country put their country’s interests first? Yes. Why is it only evil when America puts American interests first? And since America, the greatest force of good in the world, a strong America, America as the world’s superpower, is unequivocally what’s in the best interest of the world. China’s ascendency to the world’s superpower would be bad for all of the world except China and a few rogue nations. How philanthropic and caring for human rights will China be to the rest of the world when they systematically oppress, enslave, and kill their own people?
When Churchill was pushed to rush into some one-sided treaty for the appearance of peace, Churchill shouted, “When will the lesson be learned? How many more dictators must be wooed, appeased until we learn the lesson, you cannot reason with a lion when your head is in his mouth.” China is the lion and they are slowly but surely inserting our head into their mouth. And by the time we realize their jaws are clamping down on us, it will be too late to negotiate ourselves out of it.
Despite his lack of decorum and political statesmanship, Churchill will go down as a great leader because of his strength and his fearlessness. He once said, “ Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts .”
73 million Americans voted for Trump, not because of his statesmanship and his rhetoric skills but because of his strength and his fearlessness. Trump has shown the courage to fight for America and for each of us until the end against enemies both foreign and domestic. It is far better to go down fighting for America than to surrender to globalism where our interests will be subjugated to the interests of other nations.
This is what scares me most going forward, we will have a President who is not strong enough and is too embedded with the Chinese to stand up against the existential threat they pose to our country. He will acquiesce to them in the name of political expediency and to appease his special interest at the expense of America’s strength and sovereignty.
When the threat of the Nazis was the most-dire, and his war cabinet was advising him to surrender, Churchill said, “Nations that go down fighting rise up again, those who surrender tamely, perish .” China is at war with us. We have two choices, stand up and fight, or surrender and perish.

Dear Mr. Whitten
Please allow me to shed some light on a long ago happening on our beautiful Liberty County Coast.
Way back in the old days of our county only a handful of people lived on or near our waterfront.
I have heard of the Legendary story, about forty acres and a mule of what happened to our coastal property after the War Between The States. War. Allegedly after the Federal Army defeated the Confederate Army a condition of the peace was to award the former Slaves with forty acres and a mule for each family. Something along this line is our history.
As time progressed and eventually advalorem Property Tax was imposed land ownership actually became a burden to those less fortunate land owners. Gradually over time most of our property ownership transferred to those among us who were more fortunate. The more well to do amassed ownership of most of the property.
As Liberty County developed thru and after the great Depression years dirt trails became roads and eventually they were paved by local and State governments. Liberty County had two beautiful Islands named St. Catherine's Island and Colonels Island. St. Catherine's Island was separated from the mainland by the Inter-coastal waterway and therefore to this day it is only assessable by boat. In the twenties until the early forties Colonels Island was separated from the mainland by a few hundred feet of Marsh which was under shallow water for a short period of time at high tide.
When the local officials erected a causeway to Colonels Island and later built a road to the southeastern side of the Island Mr. Hammond Eve deeded a beautiful parcel of land on the bluff of the North Newport River at Halfmoon to the people of Liberty County. Along about the same time large landowner Mr. John Porter Stevens gift deeded a parcel of the eastern most tip of the mainland to the African Americans of Liberty. It was accepted belief by all that the the Eve property was for the white people only and whites were excluded from the Stevens property. This remained accepted until I became Chairman of the County Commission in 1999.
During my campaign of 1998 it became an issue that we needed to capitalize on our beautiful coastal property. Our county had approved every single Sales Tax revenue Proposal to come before the voters. However there were only three commercial operations east of I-95 in our county. Those business owners all combined only collected and reported minimal amounts of sales tax. During my campaign I became committed to changing that.
During my Administration,1999-2002 we in cooperation with the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) erected a fishing pier and enhanced the boat ramp at Sunbury. About the same time we erected a facility for social gatherings at Halfmoon on the Eve property which had been given to the county many years ago.
I have seen the Stevens deed to the county for the Martha Randolph Stevens Park. There is a condition in that deed which instructs that if the property ever ceases to be used for public recreation: "The Superior Court Judge should hold an auction and sell the property to the high bidder". It also says that the proceeds of the sale should benefit our African American people.
The property ceased to be used by anyone and remains behind a locked gate with virtually nobody using it for anything. I hope Chairman Donald Lovett or his opponent Graylin Quarterman (whoever wins) along with the new Board of Commissioners will abide by Mr. Stevens wish and sell this property to be used as commercial only for the betterment of us all. A waterfront restaurant and boat ramp would generate much tax revenue and create a substantial payroll for employees.
Sadly we remain the least developed coastal county and the Fire Protection and others services such as road maintenance etc on the east end is a heavy burden on the rest of us who own property in this county.
